Canada is changing its economic immigration programs to give more opportunities to prospective skilled immigrants. Starting January 2015, skilled foreign workers will have access to Express Entry, which will cover Canada’s key economic immigration programs:
- the Federal Skilled Worker Program,
- the Federal Skilled Trades Program,
- the Canadian Experience Class, and
- A portion of Provincial Nominee Programs
How Express Entry Works

Step 1
Potential candidates create an online Express Entry profile
Express your interest in coming to Canada as a skilled foreign worker. Starting in January 2015, create an online Express Entry profile and tell us about your skills, work experience, language ability, education and other details.
Before doing this, you will need to take a language test in English or French. If you were educated outside of Canada, you may also need to have your education assessed against Canadian standards. More information on language and education assessments is available online.
If you meet the criteria of one of the federal economic immigration programs subject to Express Entry, you will be placed in a pool of pre-screened candidates.
If you do not already have a Canadian job offer or a nomination from a province/territory, you must register with the Government of Canada’s Job Bank. Job Bank is an easy, online search tool that will help you get matched with jobs in Canada based on your skills, knowledge and experience.
Express Entry Pool
You will be given a score to determine your place in the Express Entry pool using a Comprehensive Ranking System that includes factors known to contribute to economic success (such as language, education, and work experience).
There will be regular draws of candidates from the Express Entry pool, inviting them to apply for permanent residence. Candidates with the highest scores, including those who have a valid job offer or a provincial/territorial nomination, will be invited to apply.
Your Express Entry profile will be valid for 12 months. During that time, you will need to update your profile if circumstances change, such as your level of education or language test results.
Important: Filling out an online Express Entry profile is not a guarantee that you will qualify for permanent residence. If you are invited to apply for permanent residence, information provided in your Express Entry profile will be verified at that time.
Step 2
Selected candidates are invited to submit an electronic application for permanent residence
You will receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence if you:
- have a valid job offer from an employer in Canada (subject to the Labour Market Impact Assessment process in place at that time);
- have been nominated by a province or territory; or
- are among the top ranked in the pool based on your skills and experience.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada will process the majority of complete permanent residence applications received within six months or less.
Candidates in the Express Entry pool who do not receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence after 12 months can resubmit their profile and re-enter the pool if they still meet the criteria.

I have 3 year diploma in electrical after metric with 10+ year experience in operation & maintenance how many bands I have to obtain in ielts for express entry.
Hello
I am planning to apply for canada express entry. I have completed my MSc in Eletrical Engineering in USA and BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Bangladesh. Do I need to evaluate both of my degrees from WES?
Thank you
Zahid
Highest degree would be sufficient.
Hi,
I wrote my IELTS and got the following scores.
Listening – 8
Reading – 7.5
Writing – 6.5
Speaking – 7
My CRS score was 400. If I had achieved a score of 7 in Writing, I would have attained a score of 458. Painful. I have requested for a remark for IELTS which takes between 6 to 8 weeks.
My question. Can I create two EE profiles. One with an IELTS Writing score of 6.5, while the second one with 7(which might be the upgrade after the remark). Because with the Writing Score of 6.5 and CRS of 400, I would get an Invitation from Ontario, while with the Writing Score of 7 and CRS of 458, I would definitely get an invite from Canada.
Then I would use the one which corresponds to my remarked IELTS and delete the other profile.
I hope this is not wrong, as the TRF have a certificate number.
Regards,
Akin
Hello,
I’m planning to create my profile in Express Entry as Federal Skilled Worker, and would like to know if I can update my spouse’s ECA and IETLS scores later. Currently I don’t have my spouse’s ECA and IELTS, but in the process of getting them.
Thanks,
Kishore
Hi,
my spouse´s english knowledge is below CLB4. Is it mandatory for him to take the IETLS test even if he won´t get the needed score, to be able to apply for express entry?
please advise,
Thanks,
what I mean is, can my application get rejected or deemed incomplete if my husband doesn´t take the IETLS? even if he won´t get the score to help with the points?
To get the maximum score in CRS you will need to score as below in IELTS:
L – 8
R – 7
W – 7
S – 7
Best of luck folks !!!
Is delf is acceptable for express entry program with Ielts score?

Hi!
My Express Entry as Skilled Immigrant has been on processing. Regarding on the ‘Proof of Funds’, are the Canadian Visa Officer allowed to have a joint bank account? particularly if the joint is with mother. Is it really mandatory to show proof of funds even if I have a valid job offer and positive LMIA? Another issue, regarding on the certificate of employment from previous employer, is it okay if I didn’t provide at least one certificate? because I was working with this company for less than 6 months only, and this company really didn’t issue a certificate if their workers didn’t became a permanent full-time on their company.
Thank you very much.
I hope to hear a feedback from you soon.
14 Years of Experience,36 years,IELTS Overall Band Score – 6.5, Valid WES-Evaluation Report, 308 Points
Last Year
———
1. On 14th March 2015 – My Express Entry Profile was marked ‘Eligible’ with Overall Score – 303 – I celebrated
2. In the month of June I turned 36 years
3. On 3rd July 2015 – The Profile was marked ‘Not Eligible’ with following reasons provided
• not having a valid language test
• language test results that are more than two years old
• a language test score that is too low
• not having enough relevant work experience
• not having the required education level
• not having enough funds
My consultants said because of my age (36 yrs) the points got reduced and thus could be the reason for the profile to go ‘Not Eligible’. Advised me to write IELTS
Current Year
———–
I wrote IELTS again, also had my spouse write IETLS and now my Express Entry profile is active with 308 Points
Again , my consultants keeps asking me to write IETLS to improve score to around 450
I have told them that I’m not looking for a Journalist kind of job, why can’t they look at my skills rather focus on age and IELTS Band
Please guide me.
Questions
1. Why are the reasons mentioned all different and did not point about my age or a specific reason for making the profile Ineligible
2. Are they looking for skilled and experienced worker? Then its obvious as experience increases the age would also increase/grow (Directly Proportional).
3. How can one control his age? Why/How does age matter? How CIC employees/staff
4. Incase IELTS get expired after invitation / or when PR Visa is about to be handedover. WOuld the candidate still be asked to write IELTS? Come back from scratch??
5. Incase Narayana Murthy, Ex-Chairman of Infosys wants to apply for a PR Visa for Canada, Would CIC ask him to write IELTS? Does Age factor matter? Shouldn’t his strength/skills only matter??
Totally disappointed with the score/point system. There is definitely something wrong with the score point system.
Please guide me how what should I to further?

Hello Team,

My NOC type is 1122, Professional occupations in management business consulting.
Do you have an idea of what could be the problem in my case, I estimated to reach 70 out of the 67 points required.
Thank in advance.

only the PA is required to take the IELTS. the spouse does not have to, but they can add to the overall points by doing so.
Hello Team,
My Ielts GT score is L-7.5,R-6,W-6.5,S-7.
Is this score good for Canada immigration/Express entry/PR
I am bcom graduate and having diploma certificate in electrical engineering and i am final year student of institute of company secretary of indiA having 2years of experince. I am married and 30year of age
Am i eligible?
Dear Sir/Madam
I am a work permit holder working as a postdoctoral fellow for more than two years in Canada and more than one year in Ontario. I have a foreign Masters and PhD.
Masters and PhD from Europe: I have got an equivalent Canadian Degree from WES.
According to the requirements of CIC, applicants may need to submit IELTS score for immigration purpose. If I am correct, the eligibility criteria requires an IELTS band of 6 (each section).
For these reasons, I took the exam two times and got the following scores:
First time: Listening: 6.5
Reading: 6.0
Writing: 5.5
Speaking: 8.0
Band Score: 6.5 (i.e., Average)
Second time: Listening: 6.0
Reading: 5.5
Writing: 6.5
Speaking 7.5
Band Score: 6.5 (i.e, Average)
As we can see from the second exam, I have improved the writing section by 1 point, but I still hurt the reading section.
Please note that my work on the postdoctoral fellow is on electrical, electronics and telecommunications domain where I usually work on mathematics and engineering problems. I think this affects me from getting good English score.
Also I have more than 20 international technical published papers (IEEE papers).
I am writing this letter to request the expert to help me on the possibilities to apply the any PNP program with the current IELTS scores. Is it possible to provide the full list of my published papers to compensate the 0.5 point loss of IELTS. Please also note that I also have other skills such as presentation, tutorial, and leadership and social skills which could possibly help to strengthen my application.
Other information:
Work Experience:
Canada: 2 years as a postdoctoral fellow in electrical, electronics and telecommunications
Europe: 5 years as a research assistant in electrical, electronics and telecommunications
Africa: 2.5 years as junior electrical engineer in telecommunications
Age: 35
Financial status: More than 35000 CAD
Civil status: Single
Thank you very much for reading this long explanation carefully and providing me valuable information.
Please note that I have already uploaded my profile with the old IELTS and I have 457 score by putting my work experience as “2241 – Electrical and electronics engineering technologists and technicians”.
However, my profile is not eligible for PNP and FSW? The other thing is that does the requirement of the IELTS must be satisfied by one exam, or it could be obtained from the other. I mean in my case, the reading is 6 in one of them and 5.5 in the other, and the writing is 5.5 in one exam and 6.5 in the other? (If one takes the maximum scores from the two exams, the requirement will be okey)?
Thank you for the explanation.

Hello,
Can you please tell me if I have already taken IELTS (Academic) and scored 7.0 band, will my application still be considered “acceptable” when the requirement is of IELTS (General). I was not aware of this before taking IELTS, so I want to apply on behalf of academic score. Also, it is known fact that IELTS academic is harder than general version. I took this test last year in March 2015.
A quick reply would be highly appreciated.
Only IELTS General is acceptable for PR applications.
What qualifies as one year of Canadian work experience for contract work? I’m aware it is 1560 hrs for full-time work, but if you work those hours required in less than a year, does that class as one year?
Thanks
Must be at least 1 year.
Hi Team,
I have given my IELTS 2 times. First time i got L- 7.5, R – 6.5, W – 7.5 and S – 7.5. Second time I got L – 8, R – 7.5, W – 7 and S – 7.5. However, my 0.5 marks have been reduced in Writing. Can I apply with a combination of both the scores or taking the highest score from either of the IELS? example – Can i take 7.5 of writing from 1st exam and rest of the scores from 2nd exam?
Regards
R.J
You cannot apply with a combination of two tests. Only one test will be accepted.
